Wrist problems
on: July 28, 2016, 05:58:49 PM
For some reason, my right wrist rises unnaturally high whenever I play with my right index finger and sometimes my thumb.  This issue abruptly emerged over the past week.  A month ago I could play the 4th ballade entirely with very little tension, but now I have tension in the first page of the ballade and I even struggle to play scales because my wrist is always so high.  Even when I try to play very slowly, my wrist instinctively tends to raise.  The only explanation I can come up for this is that my posture is kind of bad away from the piano.  Any suggestions?

This is just something that quickly comes to mind when I read your post, and this may be incorrect. It seems to me that you may have come under some stress (perhaps mentally or emotionally) around the time that you started having these problems, and that is leading to tension in your body muscles.

Maybe try to be aware any tension in your muscles, and also of your breathing. Try to stay relaxed--do some physical stretching and exercises to loosen tightness, keeping sure to breathe.

I don't know if that helps at all, but I hope it does!

Is your position of arms corrects? Parallel to the ground? Maybe they're just too low?

Might also be worth dropping a video as well to give people a clearer idea

I suggest getting a teacher that can work on your technique. The Russian schools do very well. That way, you can get work yourself in the most efficient way.

I've had this problem earlier this year. It was bothering the heck out of me, so since then I massaged my hand before and after practice for ten minutes each and I also had a hand grip exerciser I had (my aunt had a condition where she needed it, so I inherited her old one.) it seemed to help and I no longer did it after a while. You may also consider taking a break, and really work on relaxing yourself in general. It helped me, and just around then I was having a lot of problem in general, and my muscles used to randomly cramp, waking me up at night. It think it may have something to do with stress.

Piano Street Magazine:
Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
