Dawson String Cover ($359) vs Vanda King ($119)
on: August 12, 2016, 02:23:39 PM
Could folks comment on the Dawson String Cover for a 5'5" piano ($359) vs a pre-cut Vanda King string cover for a 5'5" piano ($119)?
I realize that Dawson's are all wool, and that Vanda's are 80% Wool / 20% Nylon.
I cannot tell why they are so different in cost.
Thanks.

don't the Dawson ones have a rigid frame or structure of some type? I think the vanda king one you just drape it over but the dawson ones are rigid and the cover front bar can be lifted back to expose tuning pins if i'm not mistaken and the wool sits above the strings, no issues w them touching right?

Yes, I got more info just now.
They have battens, and other excellent features.
Now, I see that I have to choose between Dawson and a string cover maker in Oregon, who uses a polyester blend (faux velvet) for her covers (no wool), plus magnets (no battens).
The cost is about the same between Dawson and the Oregon maker, but the difference in fabric is dramatic.
Now, I have no clue which is better, wool or this polyester blend.

wool will probably be more effective in wicking moisture from the strings and other metal parts ; polyester is more likely to be a moisture barrier. if the piano's environment is humidity controlled or low humidity that might not be a significant factor.
