MTNA programs?
on: August 22, 2016, 01:33:05 PM
Hi all,

I'm thinking about entering the MTNA Young Artist Competition this fall and wanted to hear your thoughts on which program you liked best. The time required for the competition is 30 - 40 minutes (both my programs are around 38 min.)

program #1
Haydn    Sonata in B Minor, Hob. XVI: 32 (complete)
Ravel     Gaspard de la Nuit (complete)
Chopin   Polonaise in A-Flat Major, Op. 53
program #2
     Mozart     Fantaisie in D Minor, K. 397
Chopin     Nocturne in E-Flat Major, Op. 55 No. 2
Messiaen  Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jesus - XIII. Noel
Ravel       Gaspard de la Nuit (complete)

thanks!

Yes, #2 looks good.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

the pieces are better. there is more variety.  no 2 has a shorter chopin ie <5 min , if i have to listen to programmed chopin (though I try to avoid it where I can most of the time), would rather it be shorter (vs approx 7 min of that polonaise). if you must include a polonaise, it'd look at Scriabin op 21, or one of the two available Mikuli from op 8

*you asked  :)

What about this program?

Mozart Fantaisie in D Minor, K. 397
Chopin Ballade in F Minor, Op. 52
Ravel   Gaspard de la Nuit (complete)

^is there too much "heavy" stuff in this program? (i.e. the chopin and ravel together?)

Both Messiaen and Ravel are French, and so I would pick either one.

The latest programme you suggest Mozart + Chopin + Ravel looks fine.

All about delivery on stage in any case.

Good luck!

@op, if you are prepping for a 'this fall' timeline, is it not a little bit late to still be in program planning stages? Please ignore if you have all pieces mentioned ready to go/performance standard and you are just choosing from all pieces you have prepped and are just trying to decide what to leave out and what to focus on, but honestly that is serious and a lot of music to still be 'deciding' on if your deadline is only a couple months or so away....

Having chaired these competitions at the state level. I have seen most of these pieces at the high school and college level. If the rules have not changed, you must do the same program for all the levels.  The Haydn, Ravel, and Messiaen are great choices. Play what you want so it will communicate with the judges.....you may be stopped due to time constraints. If one of the pieces is "out of the box"......go for it.

best of luck,
