How to practice after coming back to home?
on: August 25, 2016, 02:35:42 PM
I am able to practice a lot when I have off days or when I stay at home. My biggest issue is when I go outside for important appointments. I would be away from my home for hours. After a long trip to the highway later, I am already tired and worn out and not in the mood to practice.

I did a study about this and I learned that dehydration is the main cause of procrastination, but I would like to know what's up with the brain, why it is not in the mood to do a certain task when it feels lethargic.

I am concerned, because this was my problem after coming home from school. With school coming back this September, this nagging issue will continue to haunt me. I need tips and tricks to combat this problem

I don't drink coffee. I am not sleepy after I come back home, I am not in the mood to practice.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day..
Give yourself five minutes of warming up and see if your mood changes all by itself.

Just practise, even if you don't want to. It's all about dedication sometimes.

When I was at boarding school the only piano worth practising on was a beat-up grand that belonged on the rubbish heap. It sat in an unlocked major function room that was frequently a student hangout - and they rarely used the piano, so occupancy was on a first come first serve basis. The only times I could be sure to get an empty room was during mealtimes. Dinner was the preferable time so I would always be there from when it started at 7pm all the way to the 10pm curfew. The communal kitchens would be locked at 10:30 so I usually threw something small together like a sandwich or opened a can of something. Inevitably I was tired and hungry by the time I got to the piano, but doing what I love has always energised me, even if I feel so insecure about my abilities as a pianist.

Maybe get yourself more in the mood, whether on the journey home or at home - listen to some of your favorite pieces, listen to your favorite interpretations, watch piano videos, read some info about your favorite composers, become inspired.

It's a mindset you get into that pushes you not to think about a lacking motivation.

Try playing something that playing something that feels like it is outside of your regular practice routine.  For example: sight reading, exploring your books for new repertoire.  Be casual about it, and at some point you may find you latch on to a new piece of music and want to study it deeper.  Use that pique in interest to move into your practice material.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I found a solution to my problem! I take this supplement called Inositol. I notice after I take this supplement, I would be in the mood to do something and I end up wanting to stimulate my brain ala playing piano and ear training. I can only take this twice daily so I'll try taking it the second time when I come back home.

I'd be cautious about taking any kind of stuff that affects the brain, or moods, or interferes in the sleep / wake / rest cycle. I'd be afraid of side effects and long term effects.  It would be wiser to learn to take a power nap of 15 - 20 minutes when you get home, maybe with a kind of meditation to go with it, to allow your body and mind to restore themselves, rather than circumventing the safety system you were born with.
