Mozart - Phantasy in c minor, KV 475
on: September 16, 2016, 08:59:53 PM
the operatic phantasy in c minor, sometimes played before the c minor sonata, so much in this piece, this was on a concert in between Chromatic F&F and Schubert Wanderer

a student of mozart wrote in a letter that he (mozart) played this on a pedal piano, that is a piano with a pedal board like an organ. not a common instrument but still existed

I really liked it. Very clear balance between the hands and good voice leading, plus lots of dynamic changes and drama. This is how one should play a fantasy!
I don't usually hear it played that fast, but it's a refreshing change and it works in most places (though I personally found the 'Andantino' part in B flat major a bit too fast to realy enjoy the melody).
One thing - I think the tempo was a bit too unstable for Mozart in the beginning (until the D major part, where it was fine).
But like I said, this is great. I actually listened to it twice already and I'm listening to it again while writing :)

thanks for those great comments, yes the hard part in this piece is patience, to get that long line in the solemn intro without messing with the tempo, or without sounding too plodding. it's hard isn't it ! and the b-flat section is so tricky. good work for rhythm. thanks again

I really liked it!

I played this piece last year, so I think I have a pretty good handle on it...  :-[  Considering this is an opera-like piece, could you consider slowing it down a bit?  Think of it like a traumatic story, and make sure to have singing voices!

May I ask how long you've worked on this piece?  It was very well done :)

Also, which versions of it did you listen to?

thanks so much, guess it was too fast, i learned it over the summer and played for a concert in september. then just recorded it with the iphone after the concert.
i have a few recordings of this piece, i listened to Edwin Fischer, Mitsuko Uchida, and Glenn Gould which is not recommended but has some good moments. i thought the Uchida recording was too slow for my taste, Fischer is a little freer with the tempo and she is very strict
