Does anyone know what Hamelin's Etude #5 is based on?
on: September 19, 2016, 12:32:35 AM
This is from Hamelin's commentary of his fifth etude:

Quote
Understandably, I don't wish to reveal the original here, since I'm interested in finding out how skillful I was in masking the source of my inspiration!

...

It's not a terribly well-known work, but anyone with a sufficiently broader-than-usual knowledge of piano literature might recognize it. Another interesting fact is that I woke up one morning with the first bars of this etude fully formed in my head. I immediately thought, "hey, that sounds a little bit like....." and thus the piece was born.

Well, it reminds me of the Scherzo movement from Brahms piano quartet in c minor. But it could be another piece.

Sounds like it's at least inspired by Gottschalk's "Le Banjo", but that's just a guess.

all best,
