Looking for a new song to work on
on: October 15, 2016, 01:04:25 AM
Hey guys. I'm looking for some advice on the next song for me to learn. I took lessons back in grade school and now that I'm in college I keep playing occasionally for fun. Last year I learned Sehnsucht by Andreas Wolter. It took me months, but it finally sounds good, at least to me, when I play it now. I'm looking for something around that in difficulty, that sounds pretty cool too. I realize this is pretty open ended, so just hit me with anything you'd recommend.

You're new, some would go a little hard on you for your... newbieness... but I'll try and clear up a few things.
For one thing there are a lot of guys who on here who will tease or ignore you for simply referring to a piano piece as a "song". Personally I think they're just being jackasses but they have been here longer than me and are sick of every wide eyed newbie who thinks they're serious and sincere but will probably quit in a month. Not saying you will but often people do.
Vague repertoire requests are tricky to fill, especially when your only point of reference is so obscure. I had to look up the sehnsucht but not knowing whether you play it well or mediocre or terribly I can't tell you what is actually at your level. I would have to hear your playing and you will simply have to give more information.
Listening to the Wolter I think you may not realise some of the skills that playing well really entails. It's the sort of piece where you can get away with playing all the notes but not really understanding what you're doing. Once again, I don't know anything for sure but I can suspect...
But really, I don't mean to be hard on you. Actually, if you don't mind my directness here I wouldn't mind looking at your playing, talking a bit more and seeing if I can help you accomplish a bit more than you might without my help. Let me know if you're interested.
But if all you want is suggestions... well
look up: Some bach small preludes, some Chopin Preludes like no 4 in E minor, some Scriabin preludes, some easy Beethoven sonata movements like the opus 49 pair, some easy Haydn Sonatas, oh, and you should have an easy time playing Ravel's La Valse.
If you're inclined you can see some of the pieces I suggest on my channel. Don't make the mistake of thinking they're below your level, to play them WELL may take more than you think...
Also, if you phrase your request better you should ask "visitor" (that's his name) for a suggestion, he has a great knowledge of obscure and fascinating works.
