Liszt - Dante or Etude No.10, which is more difficult?
on: January 08, 2005, 02:26:20 PM
Technically speaking, which is more difficult to play, "Apres une lecture de Dante" or "Les Etudes Transcendents No.10 f-moll"?

The ending alone makes the Dante harder...

Actually, I think we cant really say one is more difficult than the other because it really depends on your technique. Dante is hard because of the middle section in the high high notes with the strange rhythm, as well as the octave passages which require stamina and accuracy. Etude No.10 is pretty tough because of it's furious maddening pace throughout --Liszt doesnt give us a break here..
Now, I vote for Dante Sonata because I love it so much more than Transcendental etude no 10. However, In the 1837 setting of no 10 there are miraculous parts that should never have been deleted, IMHO.

both pretty difficult technically.
i'd say dante sonata is more difficult because it's much more complex and more demanding.

Played them both, both are difficult. Dante being longer it obviously requires more stamina.

I have studied Dante about 10 years ago. Recently I had a look at No.10 first ever in my life (I had heard it being played bofore though). The first bar passage with both hands exchanging just made me scared.
For me it seems harder than the coda of Dante. I will try No.10 out anyway and will see. Don't you fell the same???
Or, maybe I have been getting old if I feel No.10 seems harder....??

The Dante Sonata will probably tire most people out after the first few pages if you don't use your arm weight enoughfor all those repeated chords. The Tenth Transcendental Etude requires more rotational technique (alot of it in the left hand which is usaully much harder if you haven't developed it) and those interlocking chords are difficult to get even. So in summary these two pieces are both of great technical difficulty with the Dante Sonata being perhaps more so because of the added stamina it takes to play it all the way through.

I found No.10 very hard because I was playing the first bar with my right hand above left hand. When I changed my hands, it became totally easier.

Dante has a bigger range of techniques emplyed and is Longer so I would say it's harder but no10 is concentrated and is hard too. Why do you ask?
