Bach BWV 965 (Sonata in A minor)
on: December 05, 2016, 01:08:51 PM
I don't see this being discussed anywhere on the www
How come? It's an absolute beauty and it demonstrates Bach's genius even at his early age (he wrote this when he was around 20!)
It was composed after Reincken's Hortus Musicus' first five movements (the first movement of the original piece is broken down into 3 movements by Bach), but JS actually composed first 3 mov'ts almost from scratch, citing only a few basic motives, while the other 4 mov'ts are arrangements with added counterpoints.

Adagio should be played slower imo

I like it very much--it's (largely) Bach, after all! This is an excellent recording of it and the other Sonatas:

A wonderful work of recreation and transcription. I like the Sonata part a lot more than the subsequent Suite movements.
Currently on:
Bach - WTK Book 1 n. 5-6
Beethoven - Sonate Pathétique
Rachmaninov - Polichinelle op. 3
Studies from Clementi and Moscheles
Telemann - Fantasias 1-2 in D
Haydn - b minor Sonata
