College audition pieces?
on: December 14, 2016, 03:19:07 AM
Hi! I'm a senior in high school auditioning for college as a music education major with piano as my major instrument. I was looking to get some feedback on my audition piece selection.

It's required that I perform a Bach prelude & fugue, the first movement of one sonata by Beethoven, Mozart or Haydn, and one romantic/20th century piece.

Currently, I have:
Bach- WTC I Prelude and Fugue No. 21 in Bb Major
Beethoven- Sonata No. 18, Op. 31 No. 3

For the romantic/20th century piece, I'm not sure if I should do Khachaturian's Toccata or Chopin's Nocturne in E minor, Op. 72 No. 1. I have the Toccata solidly memorized, but I feel like the Nocturne really showcases my interpretative abilities. I also feel like the Toccata is overdone. I am trying to avoid really overdone pieces.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Well, both pieces are very popular. Personally, I prefer the Nocturne ... I say, play the piece you connect with the best.
Practicing:
Bach Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue
Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 1
Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34
Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1
Liszt Fantasie and Fugue on BACH
