What if...
on: January 12, 2005, 05:05:36 AM
What if all the great composers that died an untimely death had lived to a ripe old age? Imagine all the piano concertos, symphonies, operas, sonatas, etc that we could have had if Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, and Schubert had lived full lives... :-[

Kinda of a dumb post, but it makes me sorta sad thinkin about it.

"Imagine all the piano concertos, symphonies, operas, sonatas, etc that we could have had if Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, and Schubert had lived full lives..."

Glenn Gould, in an interview that I heard said that he thought Mozart died too late (in other words, he had already peaked).

George, that's a very provocative statement. Was Glen Gould referring to Mozar'ts music, or merely his career? Could you elaborate a little? Thanks

I guess look at Liszt. He lived to a ripe old age and he really did a great deal of works in all different styles. But still we would want to hear more pieces from him. I think the greatest composer cant live long enough to send out godly music to this world, even if they died at 200 we would have still been upset and wished they lived that little bit longer so they would give us just that little more. Selfish of us huh, but thats human nature ;) Wouldn't it be heaven when we die that we find ourselves able to see and interact with all the musical greats of our history.
