Jeux D'eau by Ravel
on: June 06, 2017, 03:51:45 PM
Hello! I am in the process of finding new repertoire, and I would was looking into learning Jeux D'eau by Ravel. However, I was wondering if this piece would be suitable for someone with very small hands. As I was watching performances and reading through the score, it looks like it has some spots that require a wide span of the hand--however, I was not sure if it would still be manageable. I can reach an octave comfortably and a ninth takes a little stretching. Anything larger, I have to roll. If this is not recommended for people with small hands, does anyone have any other suggestions of Ravel pieces or even pieces from other composers that would be better for someone with small hands? I am actually in need of romantic repertoire that is not Chopin (I have played a lot of Chopin lately), so I was actually searching for romantic repertoire as well until I came across Jeux D'eau. I have already played the Sonatina by Ravel and to give you an idea of some of the other works I have played, here is a few of the pieces I have have learned and performed: Un Sospiro, Chopin Fantasy in F Minor, Chopin Etudes Op. 10 no. 3, Op. 25 No. 1, and Op. 25 no. 9, and I have also played Beethoven Sonatas Op. 2 no. 1, Op. 10 No. 3, Op. 27 No. 1 and Op. 28. Thank you so much in advance!!

I've taught this to people with small hands.  It will require some redistributions, but it is manageable.  You do need to have a comfortable enough span to play octaves and four-note chords with relative ease.  Good luck!
