Music schools
on: July 05, 2017, 06:06:22 PM
Hello there!
Which music school / conservatory / academy etc. is the most approachable? For example, is it difficult to be accepted at the Moscow Conservatory?
A few information about these, would be very helpful for me..
Thank you!

Usually the most approachable  will be at the junior college / community college level. They particularly serve students lacking a foundation that makes them competitive at a standard university or conservatory, and are geared to help with basic coursework and performance instructio  amd ensemble experience to give them their best shot at auditioning for entry as transfer into their year 2 or 3 usually.

After the.jc  cc route, smaller universities or state colleges, especially those with very small or very new music programs where they do not have a to  of students seeking spots.

your questions seem very specific and likely you should call or write to the colleges you would want to inquire about. I do not know of set age limits, I know Julliard for example has a precollege division that will parlay into the standard program later on, ie Peng Peng Gong did his first public solo recital at age eight, he was accepted to Shanghai Music Conservatory Primary, where he immediately won the China National Youth Piano Competition in 2012. He auditioned for Juilliard’s Pre-College at age 9 and was accepted on the spot by Yoheved Kaplinsky, the chairperson of the Piano Department.

I don't know about upper limits most schools would likely not have it, if the audition is excellent enough. One of my former piano teachers did not audition and enter music school/the piano program until she was in her 50's (she was good her whole life but didn't read music etc so she started formal training learning basic theory and reading etc when she entered the school in her early 50's).
in the US junior college is part of post high school study, so usually students admitted average 17-18 years old , maybe 16 on the younger end so long as they graduated high school *(ie early)
There is a range and will depend on your goals ,prep, standard of the school, etc. You would be best served consulting with your teacher and both of you reaching out to target schools to ask specific questions as they pertain to your situation.
