Operatic transcriptions recital
on: July 23, 2017, 10:08:24 PM
I came across an old disc of this recital, one I have fond memories of. I've shared bits of this before, but only segmented and never fully. I've made a couple of cosmetic edits to tidy up a few issues. Obviously it's never going to be perfect, it's live, and there are some things I don't like, but some nice playing I'd like to think, and I remember my teacher being really positive afterwards.
So a bit of a multiple files post (it's 68 mins in total).
1. Bellini/me La Sonnambula
2. Bellini/Fumagalli Casta diva for left hand only
3. Verdi/Liszt Ernani
4. Bellini/Thalberg A te, o cara
5. Rossini/Thalberg Moses Fantasy
6. Verdi/Cziffra Il Trovatore
7. Wagner/Brassin Magic Fire Scene
8. Wagner/Liszt Isolde's Liebestod
9. me Thalbergiana
encore: semi-improvised paraphrase on the Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffmann.

Andrew, I downloaded these more then a week ago, but have only just now burned it to a CD so I can listen to it properly. All I can say at the outset is, wow, what a program! It should be heard; I can't wait to hear it.
(Also before saying anything, thanks for playing the Ernani transcription. Ever since I first heard it as a precocious youth on an old disk of Claudio Arrau playing Liszt Verdi transcriptions, it's been one of my favorites. Great memories.)

This was a spectacular recital, and everyone should listen to it. Great themes boldly sung from the piano, pyrotechnical explosions of every kind, music well know, music new or rarely heard, all beautifully crafted and delivered. Listen to it if you haven't yet!

Thanks
this is one of my recitals which I'm fondest of. To a certain extent I was trying out pieces with an eye on later recording them in studio. I suppose I can say that five of them have made it to disc, and the Cziffra was never going to, on account of the original being something you just can't rationally compete with.
