So what's good on the internet?
on: January 16, 2005, 01:36:43 AM
Is there anything you've found that's interesting or fascinating online that you'd like to share?  Any good websites?  Any really useful things you get done online that people might not be aware of?

I like these websites:

https://terraserver.microsoft.com/  (Aerial photos from satellites)

https://www.theonion.com/  (Best "magazine" ever)

https://homestarrunner.com/  (Not sure what to say about this one)

https://www.dasdc.net/forum/  (Da SDC, most people from this forum are probably familiar with this one)

magdalena kozena singing love songs (dvorak, janacek, mcAinu) on amazon.com.  I was going to use this for the "most profound" forum, but decided on another for the profound since it is not piano music.

going to indiana university site to get a "study score."  woopee.

it's kind of smaller print, tho.

e-mailing Thibeaud on mozart forum and seeing if i get a response.

NOW< my biggest dream is #1 Getting someone to pay my way to see Barry Douglas this summer in IRELAND.
#2  Getting someone to pay my way to the Van Cliburn competition.

What sites would allow me to find out the following info:

ie EARN MONEY IN YOUR SPARE TIME TRAVELLING TO HEAR PIANISTS PERFORM.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

www.popdex.com -- lets you see the most popular sites on the internet at any given moment (gets pretty interesting sometimes)

www.alexa.com -- lets you see the most popular sites on the internet...in the history of the internet (goes by total hits, I think)

https://www.alexa.com/site/ds/movers_shakers?lang=en -- lets you see the sites on the internet whose popularity has changed drastically (interesting...you'll get some cool results here that aren't popular enough for PopDex)

Wow!  Very cool.  I think it's amazing to be able to tap into the what's on the mind of the world with the internet.  Tony's links are interesting that way.

Any more?

Any specifically music ones?

A classical music (not just piano) forum that I frequent is at www.good-music-guide.com.

There is also www.mozartforum.com -- strictly Mozart, of course.

Non musical, but my all-time favorite nonetheless is the website for the radio show This American Life.  They have stored soundclips for every single one of their hour-long investigations into what makes people, communities, societies, America and the world tick.  I have listened to hundreds of their programs and have yet to hear a one where I didn't learn, laugh, cry or was left indifferent:

https://www.thisamericanlife.org

Great for political arguments:

And a great place to browse for history of ideas:

(wonders if EHpianist might not have a husband or boyfriend then.  Hmmm....)  :-* :-X

I'll pop this thread back to the top.  It's not dead.

I wouldn't worry about it.  That may be all people have to say for now.  You might also have that "Bernhard Syndrome" where people see you giving an expert opinion and decide not to post anything beyond that because they think there's nothing more to say or don't think they're idea is a good as an expert.

Someone will probably add more in the future.  Maybe that interesting website hasn't even been created yet.

Here's a "Thanks in advance" for everyone replying to this thread in 2006!  :D

no.  the internet is a huge waste of time.  and, you lose your eyesight.  better to go read a book.  that is my latest decision.  but, then again - there is always shopping on the internet.  my latest searches have been overstock.com.  but, strangely despite advertising 'closeouts' - the prices are still somewhat exorbentant.  do you think they add shipping costs and then claim they ship for free.  just wondering.

bob, do you need something to do?  besides deleting 20,000 e-mails at yahoo.  why are you not answering your e-mails?  are you like me?  the only ones you answer are music related?  yes.  i understand that.  who cares about winning a car or going to las vegas.

*bob, do you ask for e-mail?  i mean - if you fill out questionnaires - you are bound to get replies.  does your wife know about all these e-mails?  are you trying to make her jealous?

Answering my emails?  All 20,000?   lol   Those are just notifications of someone posting on a forum somewhere.  The rest is spam.

I'm not asking for emails.  Spammers harvest them off websites when you post.  The more you post, the more they send.

Two ideas I have heard...
Use Yahoo Beta.  Transfer emails into a new "dummy" folder.  Then delete the folder.  Use a library or public terminal if you're connection isn't fast enough.

computer virus worm.

my problems tend to be: can't get into windows because password is forgotten.  it's so odd.  i used to have a password - then - for a long time, the screen never came up.  all of a sudden one day it came up and i couldn't remember the password.  i was so mad.  then, my son just clicked enter without putting in any password at all - and i was in the system.

I don't create computer worms.   (Where did that come from?)

I will create "ear" worms though.  Don't think about... It's a Small World.  :P
