what to wear to a college audition?

hey, i have college auditions coming up next month and i was wondering....are auditions formal suit and tie affairs? or am i supposed to dress comfortably? is this something i need 2 ask the particular college about? ne help is appreciated...thanx!

They are not formal  (formal means you where a tux, tails, etc.)

Do where a suit and tie. Don't ask the college.

Semi-formal, but the comfort is the most important part. Be sure to play your entire program with your outfit, including shoes, on so you can see if any of it affects your playing. If I could, I'd wear jeans and a t-shirt to auditions...

something about me coming directly from gym

and it wasn't a t-shirt, it was some kind of top (blouse? i'm not sure on the word)

I'd go for a tux, personally. And maybe, if it's a prestigious school, wear a top hat, bring a cane, and pop on a monacle for your introduction.

i make my students dress semi-formal for any exams. i even allow girls wear trousers, but no jeans or sport shoes.

Don't you think "ultra-formal" attire is kind of intimidating?...doesn't it just add to the snobbery of "classical" music? I personally think you shoudl wear whatever clothes you wear at home practicing or are most comfortable in...unless it's your birthday suit

Appearance means a lot...  If you don't dress nicely, they might think you're not respectful, dress too well (tux, cain, monocle, etc.) and they might think you care more about appearance than your performance.

I personally would never wear jeans and t-shirt to an audition.  Reason? I think attire also has a psychological effect on performance.  I always play better if I dress better.

Maybe it's like only using a certain lucky pen for exams because you decided that it never gives incorrect answers...
