good liszt concert pieces
on: January 14, 2018, 04:45:47 AM
I've never played anything by Liszt before except the Waldesrauschen etude and I'm looking for suggestions on a good concert piece to add to my repertoire. Although I love a lot of his song transcriptions (of Schubert, i.e.), I'm looking for something a bit more substantial. I'm asking here because Liszt wrote soooo much, and although a lot of it is subpar, maybe you know of a gem that is less often played?

Considering:
YOUR Suggestions :D ;)
Spanish Rhapsody
1st Mephisto Waltz
Benediction de Dieu dans la solitude
Les jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este

Please do NOT suggest:
B minor Sonata
Dante Sonata
Any of the transcendental etudes
The 2nd Ballade
Any of the Hungarian Rhapsodies
An opera transcription
Funerailles
Vallee d'Obermann
I already am familiar with these^ pieces and do not wish to learn them at this time.

I should add that I'm so much more drawn to Schumann, Chopin, and Brahms and have played much from these composers. Liszt is a gap in my experience that I'd like to fill.

I asked same thing to myself then figured op must be playing in a concert so will play a Liszt piece at said concert so a piece played at a concert is a concert piece? That was the best i could reason or come up with, maybe op has English ad 2nd language and meant recital vs concert ?

Sorry, realized a minute later that you this wasn't what you were looking for. Still ...

Here's another good one:
Practicing:

Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 1
Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34
Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1

Here are a few more pretty obscure and not well known pieces of Liszt that I've come across. I hope it helps.

Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen S. 179

Glanes de Woronince No. 1 Ballade d'Ukraïne (Dumka)  S. 249/1

La Romanesca S. 252a or b (There are 2 versions)

How about Liszt's arrangement of Bach's Fantasia & Fugue in G minor, BWV 542:

It definitely qualifies as 'substantial', and is breathtaking to play!
