Beethoven Piano Concerto no. 3 op. 37 (with Alkan's cadenza)
on: April 05, 2018, 12:25:12 AM
This is a live performance with a community orchestra from a few weeks ago. Program is Beethoven all the way: Prometheus overture, 3rd concerto, and the 7th Symphony. I played Alkan's cadenza which may have been the first time it's been incorporated into the actual concerto. I played Beethoven's original cadenza as encore (with ending from the Alkan transcription.) When my parents joined me for a trip to Lane Music to choose between a 7.5 Kawai and the 7 ft Bösendorfer we ended up choosing, I found out my mother was strongly against my experimenting with the Alkan. Dad asked me if there was any way I could play both cadenzas. This was the resolution!

Starts at about 19 min mark. I watched it for the first time since the performance a few minutes ago and it streamed fine. Happy listening.

I learned a lot of people were having trouble with the video link. I was recently able to record the stream onto a new Zoom H2n I received as a birthday gift. It was a lot more enjoyable for me listening to it after burning it onto a cd, a magical night. Besides being broken into tracks, it is just as is on the video. I think Beethoven's cadenza is a better fit for the concerto, but I'm glad I did this experiment, and besides two chords I got backwards, I'm really please with how well the Alkan came off on that little Bosendorfer. Enjoy!

This is pretty amazing (particularly getting to hear the Alkan cadenza). You did a good job with the cadenza, it's not the hardest thing Alkan ever wrote, but it's still pretty treacherous..
