Only Richter comes to mind for does this. But he was such a legend that he can get away with almost anything.

What is your reaction if you go to a solo recital and you see the solist brings their sheet music. Seems like its almost expected that people should play from heart and it seems like the most common thing to do.

Opinions? Thanks!

I have not attended a concert where the music is played from the score, but then I live in a very small town with only a few performances.    I would personally have no problem with it

You might want to look at this New York Times article, as it lists several concert pianists that play from the score other than Richter

Also add Yundi Li  to this list

Thanks. I read the article. I think there is a thing going that if you play without a score you are better then someone than someone who uses a score. But its nice to see that some really great ones are not using the score.

The argument about classical period music is to be played with a score seems convincing. I know that Beethoven performed his music with the Score. And it was Clara Schumann and Liszt who started on playing without.

In my experience it is common to see a working gigging musician use music.  Memorizing is of course common in university and conservatory exams and recitals.  However, when considering working musicians than need to learn lots of music quickly, have short notice for gigs, and somehow have to balance that with life in general, it is just more economical to read from sheets.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

It's quite common to use the score when playing contemporary music.
