gottschalk - la savane
on: May 11, 2018, 09:18:54 PM
does anyone have experience with this piece. i don't understand the variation in eighth note triplets.. it says "main droite seule," but the fingering it gives is impossible, and i don't understand why there are "x"'s over certain notes.  how are you supposed to play this passage? i looked for videos on line, and the only guy i found actually skipped this entire variation.... figures...

The version I found on IMSLP uses the obsolete "English fingering", where x=thumb, 1=index finger, 2=middle finger, etc. (The now-standard 12345 fingering used to be called "Continental fingering" as a contrast to "English" - you can sometime see these terms used in older printed music.)

Oh wow… Thank you so much. In all my years of piano playing I have never encountered that before. I have the Dover addition which is some original print so I guess that is the one also on IMslp.  I will take a look at it again with that in mind. Without knowing what those exes meant it was the most bizarre fingering I have ever seen
