...to learners who can't read music (possibly don't even know the names of notes)?

I remember something from... two decades ago (geez, ich werd alt....oder ich BIN alt...., which might not be grammatically correct.).  It was on a Mac so I bet it was probably only available for a Mac.  It was also geared toward children I think.  Probably used MIDI for sound.
