I read this article before and the way it's presented is misleading. The study was done in a country where the language spoken is tonal (pitch-dependent), and the kids who were made aware of pitch through music studies, then got better at recognizing pitch. Other languages are not pitch-dependent so it doesn't really apply.
In any case, a good reason to study piano is to learn to play piano. Will a parent who is hoping for improvement in math or languages really be supportive of their child's piano studies, if nobody is interested in piano? (I've heard about problems being encountered by teachers due to this.)
