A Massive Glimpse Into Ligeti’s Pianistic Universe
Performing Ligeti’s complete Etudes is a challenge for any pianist. Young pianist Han Chen has received both attention and glowing reviews for his recording of the entire set for Naxos. We had the opportunity to speak with the pianist after his impressive recital at the Piano Experience in Cremona last fall. Read more >>

I'm learning a few simple pieces to polish my practice skills. One of them is Grieg's "Watchman's Song" from the Lyric Pieces Op. 12. In the intermezzo section in e minor you have to play a bass note and two fast arpeggios distributed over the left and right hand. This has to be played pianissimo. I'm having trouble practicing this to achieve an even arpeggio whilst playing so soft. Right now, some notes just aren't heard at all whilst others jump right out in the middle like it's marked with a sforzando.

How do you guys practice these kind of spots? What practice tricks do you use?

Best,
Marijn

What piano are you playing on? If it is a real piano (not electric), do the keys require even pressure to be played? My old teacher’s piano was notoriously “firm” (you had to press super hard to get the notes to play) except for a few notes, which would slip right down to the bottom twice as loud as the others, if you weren’t prepared for them.

But I haven’t ever been one to blame instruments. I guess lots of slow practice. I would definitely include daily scales and arpeggios (at varied speeds and dynamics)  if you don’t already in your practice routine.
Success only comes before work in the dictionary (ye we have all heard that 10,000x but absolutely true in piano)
