Concerto for solo piano
on: November 17, 2018, 08:08:30 PM
My own composition. I've posted a live concert video of this before, but here's a version with sheet music (slight retrospective editing, noise reduction also). Not an absolutely pristinely accurate performance, but it is one take live.
The sheet music also contains basic commentary regarding the orchestration.

There are a few fairly apparent influences: Rachmaninov/Warsaw Concerto in the first movement and Liszt Totentanz in the last spring to mind.

Comments welcome. At some point I'd like to get this performed with an orchestra - this is a hybrid version of the two piano score reduced to one piano only - also I'd quite like to publish the score.

Thank you :)

I may have to try redoing this with orchestral samples plus solo piano.

can you upload a MIDI version, that contains both the orchestra and piano part?

do you have a digitized sheet music of your concerto? there should be some software that converts sheet music into MIDI files, then simply feed the MIDI into Synthesia (midi player), and we can hear what's it's like  ;D ;D ;D

I'm using an old version of Sibelius (5). Iirc, I have the first movement mostly written out and orchestrated within one version of the file, so I'm able to produce a rudimentary orchestral sound within the software. To be honest though, the sound sample library isn't very good and sounds vaguely ridiculous. I had the opening on my soundcloud but fairly sure I deleted it. The piano sound on this recording isn't perfect (nor entirely technically accurate), but it's a lot better than the sampled piano. Possibly at some point I can approximate a combination of the piano audio here (I'd have to edit selectively of course, as in some places the piano is playing the orchestral part) with, hopefully, a better sample library for the orchestra.

that was really intense, truly a wonderful composition, and what amazing technique you have.
I also watched your video of La Sonnambula and all those arpeggios and tremolos and runs are just scary to see.
You've got impressive skills, as composer, arranger and player.
May I ask you if you started playing the piano very young (I suppose so) and if you attended the conservatory (I also suppose so)?

Glad you like it (and La Sonnambula!)

Yes, I did start young (maybe not by today's standards though), about seven or eight. I had a big gap after leaving school, however, and didn't really play piano for close on ten years, so there was no conservatory education. When I returned to taking piano seriously, I ended up having intermittent private lessons with a guy who was considered a good teacher and who was also a Paris Conservatoire graduate. He did a lot of good for me on the discipline side of things. I always had good natural technique, and whilst I had self-taught myself a fair amount by working through Liszt etudes and rhapsodies, if it hadn't been for his professional input I would have remained a somewhat undisciplined pianist with a bit of natural ability.
