Offenbach Barcarolle - public piano
on: June 30, 2019, 01:37:32 AM
Got a friend to video me with some nice equipment :)

Semi-improvised paraphrase, some bits have been written out, others.. haven't!

Offenbach Barcarolle is a beautiful melody.  I'm very familiar with the melody, as is probably true for most people.  Not sure where I heard it though. When I first heard you play this, I thought you were improvising the gorgeous introduction.  But then I decided to listen on youtube this part of Offenbach's final opera, The Tales of Hoffmann.  So I know now this is not the improvised spot and I learned where this melody comes from.

Very enjoyable to hear your performance!  I'm sure all the people passing by enjoyed this as well.

Yeah, the introduction is taken directly from the original. I didn't play what I have in my draft write-out though! The full paraphrase isn't clear in my mind yet: I played it in a recital many years ago, but in a different form and it's now become slightly more transcription than paraphrase compared to before. Still room for improvisation within the framework! I've got some more video from this mini public session still to come and may upload later.

A most interesting pianistic take on this is Sorabji's Passeggiata Veneziana from the mid-1950s, whose score (both as a copy of the composer's ms. and as a typeset edition by Jonathan Powell) is available from The Sorabji Archive (www.sorabji-archive.co.uk) by emailing sorabji.archive@gmail.com and a splendid recording of which is to be found on the American Altarus label (AIR-CD-9067 - see https://www.altarusrecords.com/AltarusMainCatalogue.html ), played by Jonathan Powell.

Haha, the cam stabiliser tech was pretty effective considering it was basically being carried around. I've got another 20 mins or so of footage still to come once it gets rendered and sent to me.  :)
