Topic: Preparation for Rach 3 (Read 3517 times)

Hey guys,
I am currently 14 years old and would like to be able to perform Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 3 by the time I graduate high school(2022). I was wondering if you had any pieces I could work on that would help me be ready for this concerto. Here are some concerti I have already performed:

Shostakovich Concerto No 2
Schumann Concerto in A minor
Mozart Concerto No 23
Tchaikovsky Concerto No 1
Prokofiev Concerto No 3

Additionally, I have performed many preludes and etudes-tableaux my Rachmaninoff.

Hi. Just to disclose: I don't play the piano. There is someone here that just got done playing Rach 3 with orchestra for graduate degree. He also played Rach 2 before also I believe. Hopefully he will get to you on this.

Here are my thoughts: It looks like you have a great list of pieces that you play now. Here is what I would do. First I would choose to play Rach 2, but that doesn't help you.

I would pick maybe a 3 minute passage (or passages that total maybe 3 minutes) from each of the 3 movements of rach 3 that you feel you could play reasonably well now with work. I wouldn't pick the most difficult passages, but would pick passages that are at or slightly above you current level.

My advice is this... if you want to learn Rachmaninoff's 3rd - it isn't a question of whether you think you are ready... the question is whether you're committed.

I've only played 2 of the pieces you've mentioned and I'm currently learning Rachmaninoff's 3rd. I also haven't played any of the Rachmaninoff Etudes-Tableaux, but I am DAMN determined to learn the Rach 3.

You've got basically two years? Start learning it now. Divide it up into sections and plot out on a calendar when you're learning what. Maybe start at the end. Just get something under your fingers as soon as you can. And then continue working on other pieces too. You can learn sections, drop them, forget about them, and then revive them later to put the whole thing together.
