The Quiet Revolutionary of the Piano – Fauré’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

In the pantheon of French music, Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) often seems a paradox—an innovator cloaked in restraint, a Romantic by birth who shaped the contours of modern French music with quiet insistence. Piano Street now provides sheet music for his complete piano works: a body of music that resists spectacle, even as it brims with invention and brilliance. Read more

Vanhal Symphonies
on: July 27, 2019, 09:27:25 AM
Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739-1813), born in Bohemia, was a contemporary of Mozart and wrote some substantial symphonies.  A few years ago I ordered a couple CDs of his symphonies on Naxos.  I find him a creative artist, not afraid to take risks, sometimes even idiosyncratic.  The complexity and layers of his music impress me, not far behind Mozart.  In this aspect I believe he surpasses Haydn.  Though his brilliance is not on par with his famous contemporary, he is just as polished.  Vanhal's stature lies between the French composer Etienne Mehul and Mozart.

I'm interested to hear from those of you who know his music.

If you've never heard Vanhal, here is a link.  His Symphony in G minor is an excellent
introduction and perhaps his finest work.

He was not of an age, but for all time.

I haven't heard of him before.  Sounds nice.

What's risky though?

There are times where he isn't afraid to bare his soul in his self-expression and break the rule of propriety, especially for the classical period.  It's something unique I can't think that another composer has done.

I have my Vanhal CDs stored away right now.  I can't think of a particular symphony or passage.  But if you listen to a couple you should hear what I mean.
