Nosferatu (1922) - Improvised Music
on: November 08, 2019, 11:19:28 AM
Here is something different.

I've been watching silent films recently, paying specific attention to those with keyboard accompaniment.  It is another aspect of improvisation I would like to explore.

This film is relatively new to me, so there are little of any preconceived notions of what a typical score for this film includes.  As is common practice, I did view the complete film all the way through before sitting down to improvise.  A number of thematic ideas were identified in order to match music with the plot, however I wanted the majority of the music to be improvised.

There are a number of variants of the film, the one presented here is public domain to my knowledge.  All copies of the film were nearly destroyed at one point by court order, but there was at least one print already in distribution.  Hint, you may know the story by another name, there might be vampires.  If you want to know the plot look here

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Have you heard Gabriela Montero's improvised accompaniment on youtube? If not, I highly recommend it!

Yes, I did listen to it.  However, only after this improvisation was recorded.  She chose a more through-improvised approach with regard to linking plot and musical themes.  I found the most interesting parts of her improv was music in transitional points of the film.  She brought forward some of the smaller details of the story.
