Play By Ear Series Compilations
on: January 18, 2020, 10:57:03 PM
Message to the Moderator:

In December 2019, I posted two Christmas songs that I learned by ear on the piano. These two posts were then transferred to one thread. It put a sour feeling on my Christmas, but I sort of understand the move. But the fact of the matter is that my play-by-ear abilities is already second nature and I have built up the skill for the past 2 years (heading to 3 years in 2020 and beyond.) To solve this problem: since playing by ear is one of my predominant activities, I decided to create a thread solely dedicated to this matter. All of my play by ear videos, I will post them here. I have a good history on this forum piano street, so I have no ill-advised intention of violating any rules. That's not what I am intending to do. These videos, I watch them during my ear training practice so I won't forget the solfege and the chord progressions of the songs. This thread is like a progress log of how my ears will continue to get better as time goes on. A time will come, where I am playing along with a recording and I am playing the melody and accompaniment simultaneously, hearing it for the first time.

Message to the forum members:
I want everyone to see how I am doing with my play by ear activities. Forum members are free to comment on what they think about my videos.

I don’t understand why you are not listening to music and playing both hands together as that should be the goal in playing by ear. Why don’t you give it a try and see what happens and what you can learn from it?

At this stage of the game for my relative pitch, I am still discovering the various melodic and harmonic patterns by ear. I am still at discovery/sponge level TBH. My goal is to amass a vocabulary of melodic and harmonic each for the melody and harmony separately for now. For the songs that I transcribe, I do know the solfege and the relative chords for each of the songs. I am currently collecting the patterns so that when it reoccurs in another song, I will make connections.

Hi Jason
I will be the first to admit that I don’t completely understand the goal for these exercises—- but I am wondering why you are not attempting to play with either the hand or fingering you would use if you were actually playing the music.  For example, on this one, wouldn’t everything be played with the right hand?

XD - lol! - You're asking me what's the goal for this "exercises?!" -

It's simple:

To develop the world's greatest ears!!! :o

You're asking me why I'm only playing with one hand:

Hang in there! As my ears improve, I will basically be a one-man band on the piano and guitar! Playing with both hands!!! Spoiler Alert!!! ;D

I am asking why you chose to play with the left hand.  You are playing notes  in the melody, in the treble clef range; this would normally be the right hand.

I would think (?) you would want to practice the fingering and hand position as if you were using both hands—- so the RH for this would seem natural.

I don’t understand why you are not playing with the hand and the fingers you would normally use if you were playing the piece.  The last video is all treble melody.  Why wouldn’t you play this with the right hand?

Years ago, I had a right hand injury. My right hand would collapse if I play anything. Although this problem has dissipated lately, I still don't have full trust with my right hand.
