A collection of improvised preludes
on: April 16, 2020, 10:04:38 PM
My planned summer recital has been cancelled due to events rather outwith my control, so I'm rather unmotivated towards work on repertoire in the conventional sense. Hence more improvisation!

That’s the stuff Andrew, more please, longer and wilder ! By the time lockdown ends you might have acquired a whole new musical direction; in addition to your usual, of course, not instead of it.

I'm wondering, did the artwork inspire the music or did the music influence the choice in art?  The music so articulately reflects the visuals within the miniature form given to it.

Great stuff.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I had decided to improvise short preludes on general ideas, mood music perhaps. The titles are representative of those moods, and I looked for appropriate artwork online afterwards. I don't know if that means I have good musical taste or good artistic taste ;D

To continue the general vein, a somewhat experimental miniature improvisation..

Excellent ! The underlying spirit of Celestial Railroad by Ives but couched in different, possibly more menacing vocabulary. Also like quantum’s March to School except on a train.

Thanks, I'm working towards a set of improvised preludes.

All these comprise some of the most interesting music I have heard from you. Don’t stop at a set though, why not just build an infinite series of them in a permanent thread ? You seem to produce them so easily that it could scarcely impede any progress in other conventional directions.

I had in mind to put together a little suite and I've got a nice collection for the purposes I had in mind, but that's no reason not to start on another set later..

These are great. I especially liked the berceuse. I too hope you keep  these coming.
The only suggestion I can give is to change the title of the last piece: it's either "lutin diabolique" or "lutins diaboliques", but not "lutins diabolique" :)

Thanks, I'm making intermittent progress on my project! And...

Omg, you are so completely correct, an elementary French grammar fail there!

A further addition.

This is a tribute to Beethoven. Very deliberate allusions in this improvisation to his op.26 funeral march.

A little miniature.

I had in mind the general tenor of some of the Alkan Esquisses.

On the Dies Irae, in a style not far removed from late Liszt.

My piano is really not holding up well in a tuning sense. I've got some other material, but I've been trying to pick and choose the best items and I'm making them into a lockdown improvisation album of sorts - this is now almost done! I have put some other additional material on my channel, but that's been just sheet music vids of old recital performances I've found when going through memory cards, rather than improvisations.

I hope you continue with this series.  Though, it is understandable that you would like to have your piano in decent tuning when recording.

I feel I've reached a natural conclusion to the set of improvised preludes. However, that doesn't stop me from producing some separate fresh improvisations.. It's getting increasingly challenging when I feel like I have to avoid certain notes.  ;D
