In a Sentimental Mood transcription
on: June 20, 2020, 12:49:30 AM
Anyone have a transcription (even incomplete) of In A Sentimental Mood's piano part per the definitive arrangement below:

As a classical player, I found it absolutely nuts that an official/unofficial transcription doesn't exist of this magnificent piece.

I only found the beginning which was an absolute MIRACLE find and it's seriously the only transcription of the original arrangement I have ever found:

As it happens, I started transcribing this piece (both piano and saxophone parts) a couple of years ago. It's not complete, but here is the link:

(What an odd coincidence, seeing as I'm also a classical player and don't write transcriptions that often.)

I should add that I didn't quite follow the original - for instance, Duke seems to play octaves where I have an arpeggiation. I can make a more authentic one at some point in the future.

This is amazing, thank you so much!!  I can't wait to play it when I have access to a piano again.  How long did it take you?  Just curious, I really don't have the ear for transcription and find it unfathomable lol.

It probably took me several hours in total. I've started making a more accurate version since I posted this, so I'll upload that fairly soon.

I just looked at the transcription, and it seems like something Duke would have done at the keyboard.

Without the recording and all that I couldn't say if at bar 17 the rhythm is exactly right for the tuplets in sixteenth notes, but it looks good to me.  It's legible and is something you can read, so I'd call that good.

I would say that's a good deal, but that's just from glancing at the notation, not comparing it to the record.

Yeah, I would bet that took a number of hours.  I'm a pretty good transcriber, but even just pencil and paper, that's a good amount of work, plus dealing with the MuseScore software.

I bet even that bit took more than "several" hours, but you may be better at using MuseScore than me.  With a pencil and paper that would have taken me about seven or eight hours of nearly constant work -- which includes the rewinding of the recording medium, and sharpening of the pencil, so I'm not that dumb, but it is methodical work.

Essential, methodical work, but it has to be done!  Maybe not as exciting as pleasing the crowds, but if it's a jazz record, you have to learn it off the record.  No other way.

ETA Oh, from the Duke+Trane album!  Well, I haven't played through the transcription, but it seems about right.  Anyway, that's the best lesson any teacher gives a student, right?  Trust but verify.  That's why I don't call all the errors in the solutions of Schaum's problem sets a bad thing.

EETA I just now listened to the classic record, including this track.  No, MuseScore doesn't make it easy to download the transcription without making up some fake account and all that garbage.

Yeah, from what I remember of the transcription, that's about right.  Lots of work by Duke in fourths.

It's a good tune, and I've never played it (obviously heard it, but not in my "book"), so thanks for the reminder to learn a "new" tune.

That is a pretty sick short solo Duke takes about midway.  I'm hearing two pianos there, though.  It could be an artifact of the tape, but I don't think so.

That's pretty good.

Since one can't view MuseScore documents offline, such as at the keyboard or while listening to the recording, all I can say is, looks like some octaves appeared and so forth.

I don't think giving the MuseScore people one's banking information is the best way to disseminate the material.

But, it looks good.  Won't be able to say unless I can look at the transcription offline, such as at the keyboard or while listening to the recording.

Thank you so much, this is GOLD!! Imagine how many decades of piano players missed out on being able to play this beautiful piece.  Thank you again, it is very much appreciated.  Also incredible how quickly you can transcribe.
