Schumann pianoconcerto on piano & organ
on: July 03, 2020, 07:42:57 PM
Hi everyone!

I have been reading on pianostreet since I was quite young, but now I decided to share some music myself. I recently recorded Schumann's pianoconcerto in a special version: the orchestra part is played on a church organ.

The sound of the piano is not so great, but I am really curious wat you think of this concept and of our performance!

The piece starts at 2:38.

This is really Excellent!  Very fine playing from both of you.

I appreciated your sensitive registration choices, you made the most out of that organ.  The phrasing on the piano was very lyrical.  Both parts seamlessly flowed in and out of each other.  In this arrangement, you have allowed lines in the piano part to shine though, lines that frequently are obscured in the orchestral and two piano versions.

For a long time, I too have been contemplating doing piano + organ arrangements.  However, when searching for recordings I haven't found many people doing this.  There is plenty of duet music around for use in church services, but not so much with concert repertoire.  As you have demonstrated, the piano + organ pairing works very well for concert music.

Can you share the stop list of the organ?

I hope you share more of your music here on Pianostreet, as well as do more of these Piano + Organ arrangements.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

NORMALLY... I hate it when people mess with the instrumentation of classical music (like hearing the chords of Gymnopedie with a Violin playing the melody    :P), but this had me intrigued and I like the sound.

As Quantum said - share more.    :)

And yes you are right, unfortunately there is almost no concertrepertoire for this combination. It also not so easy to find a good location: usually the tuning is a difficulty because it depends so much on the temperature what the tuning of the organ is. We can usually only use the instruments together during the spring/summer.

We also recorded Beethoven's Allegretto from the 7th symphony. I made the arrangment, but of course the result differs a lot from the original orchestra version. If you are interested, you can listen to it at 11:10:

I like and really enjoyed what I heard.  CONGRATULATIONS !!!

One major challenge though in any recording is how to capture the audio scene as near the original as possible, and sometimes "improve" on it a bit.  Although this is quite subjective, I thought there were a few parts where the organ could have been more forceful and dominant, which was somewhat aggravated by the natural build-up of the attack. But overall, it was quite an enjoyable listen.
