[VIDEO] R. Shchedrin Basso Ostinato
on: July 10, 2020, 10:57:40 AM
Hello all. Here is my performance of R. Shchedrin Basso Ostinato. The true reason I am writing this post, however, is not the performance alone - during July, I have to make a final decision about my future career. Currently, I have two options: pursue engineering in university or study music to become a concert pianist. I realize the steep competition among the concert pianists as well as the fact that I considerably lack technical skills for my age (I am 19 years old). On the other hand, I love music which makes me question whether or not there could be even a slight possibility of succeeding in my goal of becoming a concert pianist.
I would be really grateful if anyone could express their honest opinions about my chances.

Hi and welcome to Pianostreet.
Most successful professional musicians will diversify their professional activities. For example, they may train to be a concert musician but engage in a much wider set of musical activities than concertizing. They may play in chamber ensembles, direct choirs and orchestras, do vocal coaching, compose, teach, write, produce etc. Their main focus, say concertizing in this case, still remains something they do, it is just they do not have to depend on it. It becomes something to do out of passion, because they love doing it, not because they need to do it to bring in money.
It is only a very few that can solely rely on concertizing to make a living. Being selected by the establishment as one of these artists is completely subjective, not always based on skill and ability.
I'd say do both music and engineering. It might even land you a job that combines both interests.

Regarding the Basso Ostinato, I would work at bringing out and contrasting the various shapes of melodic contour and rhythm. Work on details. You have good command of the notes and manage the forward drive of the music well.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
