Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you buy MIDI cables, I don't believe they come with software.
Also, how does this relate to
performance
?

A MIDI to MIDI cable doesn't come with software. I just bought one last week.
A MIDI to PC cable (either USB or serial) does normally come with software. If you get a recommendation let me know too, I need to buy one of those.

right, a MIDI cable is just a cable .. a piece of wire. even a MIDI to PC cable, if it comes with "software" is only coming with an appropriate USB driver.. still no software, not like you're asking about..
you have to buy software -something like Cakewalk Home Studio, or Finale, or Sibelius, depends on what you are hoping to achieve.
You then connect your MIDI device (ie. your digital keyboard, drum machine, whatever) to your computer via a MIDI cable that you go and buy at the store.
and yes - this topic does not belong in the Performance area

Probably true, but there really isn't an obvious place to put it, which is probably why you didn't recommend another area.
Try here, it's another forum I look at also, and I think your question might get a better answer. I'd give you one if I had it but I don't.
