Do I have the skills to learn this piece?
on: September 17, 2020, 11:29:16 AM
Recently, I was taking a look at Mendelssohn's work and I came across Lieder ohne Worte. I heard a lot of material and I loved Op.53 No.3. I researched your note and saw that it was 6. I thought it was strange because it sounded so difficult, but after seeing the notes, it just seemed fast. However, I don't know if I guarantee myself to learn this piece. Seeing what I've already learned, can you tell me if I have the necessary skills? (I used google translator)
My repertoire:
- Toshiro Masuda - Sad Theme
- Queen - Bohemian Rapsody
- Bach - BWV113
- Bach - BWV126

- Schumann - Op.68 No.8 The Wild Horseman
- Bartok - Vol.1 No.33
- Kuhlau - Sonatina Op.20 No.1
- Chopin - Waltz No.19 B.150
- Beethoven - Bagatelle No.25 Fur Elise
- Chopin - Prelude Op.28 No.7
- Bach - Minuet BWV121
- Burgmuller - Op.100 No.16
- Chopin - Prelude Op.28 No.4
- Clementi - Sonatina Op.36 No.1 2nd Movement
- Burgmuller - Op.100 No.1 La Candeur
- Burgmuller - Op.109 No.13 L'Orage
- Burgmuller - Op.100 No.3 La Pastorale

Hi irockleefx,
Welcome to Pianostreet!
I can't tell whether you have the "necessary skills" to play this piece. Did you have the "skills" needed to learn all that repertoire?
Do I think you can learn this piece?
Well, not knowing anything about how you learn, if you have a teacher and/or how you practice, makes my answer based solely on your learned repertoire list.
I'm familiar with most of your learned repertoire. The majority of it seems below the level of this piece. However, there are a few pieces at this level and a few a couple levels above this piece.
Two Chopin Nocturnes, Schumann's Traumerei and the Schubert Impromptu are at a higher level listed by most sources.
This particular piece has a few things you need to be comfortable with:
1. The tempo is Presto Agitato
2. 4 note chords
3. 3 note chords both hands simultaneously
4. Base note, chord leaps which you should be able to handle from the nocturnes you learned.
5. Broken chords throughout
This piece looks like it would be quite challenging (but not impossible) for you based entirely on the repertoire you have learned.
I hope I have been helpful, Joe.

Hello, thanks for the welcome and the answer! @1piano4joe
We don't have piano teachers here (interior of Brazil), so I study alone. My score reading is not very good, so I learn the pieces by memorizing.
Regarding my performance in the pieces, I certainly can't bring out all the nuances, but I think the sound is pleasant. Of the parts I mentioned, I just wasn't satisfied with the Sonata K545 1st, it was fine without salt.
But, anyway, I believe it is better to prepare for this piece, before trying. Can you show me some pieces? I would appreciate it very much!

Hi irockleefx,
I would suggest the Chopin prelude Op.28, no. 20 in c minor. It has 4 note chords in the right hand and a much more "doable" tempo.
I think that would give you both some preparation for the Mendelssohn and some idea of how ready you are or not.
In addition, you seem to like Chopin and would probably enjoy learning this piece.
How well do you play Burgmuller Sweet Sorrow? That has a broken chord left hand and a more moderate tempo. Could be useful to review that piece.
Toccatina by Kabalevsky might be useful.
Maybe, learn a different Mendelsson piece first?

I will definitely learn this piece from Chopin, I'll also take a look at this piece by Kabalevsky. As for the 4 note chords, I have a certain facility (my hands reach an 11th with ease). My biggest fear in Mendelssohn's play is the fast arpeggios. The most difficult pieces with arpeggios that I can play are Nocturne Op.9 No.1 and Carnaval of Schumann Op.9 No.12.
I'm thinking of learning the Songs without Words Op. 19b No. 1 too, it has arpeggios and it doesn't seem difficult to me. What do you think?

Hi irockleefx,
For development of the left hand arpeggios I will suggest some pieces. You don't have to learn to play them. Just study/practice the left hand only.
1. Moszkowski Op.91, no.17
2. Concone Op.30, no.20
3. Haberbier Op. 53, no.5
4. Rachmaninoff Op. 33, no. 8
5. Czerny Op. 740, no.41
6. Concone Op. 30, no.19
Look them over, pick 1 or 2 and just do some sections/measures.
I hope I have been helpful, Joe.
