Competition repertoire
on: September 22, 2020, 09:42:36 AM
Hi!
I've been planning on attending a national piano competition that is held about 1,5 years later meaning that I have plenty of time to prepare my programme. I don't know the list of concerti for the finals nor the final rules of program yet (last time the program had to include music by Debussy, Janáček or Messiaen because then were their anniversaries) as they'll be published not until next spring. So, this is what I have this far based on the instructions from the last time the competition was held:
(The program has to include national music composed after 1980)
First stage:
(Instructions: Baroque music, two etudes as follows: 1. etude from Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin or Rachmaninoff & 2. 20–21th century etude and then a program of free choice. Maximum duration of the 1st stage is 20 min)
Bach: Partita no 2 in c minor; 1st movement (Sinfonia)
About 2:30 min lasting national piece (1984) (
I'm sure it's considered a contemporary etude but I'll have to check that out
)
Chopin: Etude op. 25 no 8 D-flat major
Waltz op. 42 A-flat major
Scherzo no 3 (c# minor)
If the contestant has to play Debussy or other 20th century composer next time the competition will be held I'll take the waltz by Chopin off and play maybe Debussy etude no 7 (chromatic). The national piece can't be taken off.
Second stage
(Instructions: Viennese classical music, 5 min lasting music from the national composer which contestant has to play and then a free choice of repertoire. Maximum duration of the 2nd stage is 30 min)
Beethoven: Piano sonata op. 27 no 1 (complete)
5 minutes piece by the composer
Liszt: Hungarian rhapsody no 12
Finals
I don't know the concerto yet. If the concerto is longer, the contestant plays only the 1st or 2nd & 3rd movement(s). If it's a short one (Liszt or Mendelssohn, for example), the contestant plays the whole concerto.
So, what do you think of my programme? I know it's kind of pointless to think about the program before I know the final rules but I just want to know what do you think about these pieces for a competition in general. The HR puzzles me the most. Is it "full" enough? Would Tarantella from Venezia e Napoli be a better choice?
Here's some playing by me if it helps to see what kind of music would fit me the best:
(I'm sorry that I was unclear with my nationality/compulsory pieces. I just don't want to expose the competition I'm attending in case somebody would find out. That would be embarrassing...)
Regards,
Samuel
