Improvisation inspired by Liszt's Vallée d'Obermann
on: October 12, 2020, 09:47:31 AM
Some definite similarities of mood and vague ones of structure. A bit more restful - there isn't a storm section to speak of - and obviously not as polished, it is only an improvisation!

Very beautiful Andrew. I had not heard the Liszt so I listened to it just now. I far prefer your musical imagery but I suppose that is par for the course from one who prefers spontaneity and life to form and polish. However, one chord type in the Liszt, (Bb,D,F,Bb) in the right hand over an F# octave down below really hit my ear and I stored it for future use, so indirect thanks for that. That’s why I’m not a musician, hear one chord and the rest goes in one ear and out the other - hopeless case am I not. Your playing forms continue to expand in exciting ways through this lockdown.

Thanks! Liszt is more skilled in terms of development and transmutation of themes, but there are some nice moments in this I think. I've definitely acquired a taste for modulations to the median minor and submediant minor and have now established clearcut mechanisms for doing so; they seem to be cropping up a fair bit. A few little semiquotes in this, not just from the Liszt but also from, somewhat incongruously, the Pletnev Nutcracker transcription!
