Gatto e Heron nella Finestra
on: December 31, 2020, 10:37:28 PM
Hello!

Years ago I posted a few improvisations on Piano World. I think it was generally a very positive experience - until the day I started asking questions about why folks felt the need to post their music anonymously. After one too many questions I was booted out of there.

Sadly, I was in the process of posting a new piano piece for the current recital at the time. Rather than allowing my final musical contribution to go through - which had already been submitted prior to my offending question - the question and the piece were both summarily expunged. This really made no sense to me since one really had nothing to do with the other. That seemed somewhat mean-spirited to me, but what do I know.

Anyway, after all these years I came upon Piano Street and thought this might be a nice place to finally post "Gatto e Heron nella Finestra."

Thank you for the opportunity.

'Geo

This is a pretty improvisation with a catchy main phrase. Anonymity is always a rightful option on forums but I cannot imagine the Adult Beginners recital posters being upset by that question as they are by and large an easy going lot. I have been posting bits and pieces of my own mad stuff in their recitals for a couple of years now ever since Sam asked for more contributions and I have experienced very little negativity.

Anyway, please let us hear more of your spontaneous creations.

Thank you for the kind words Ted.

Most posters on Piano World had no problem with discussions of anonymity or related issues. Several of us had cordial exchanges until a moderator insisted that such discussions were inappropriate. She didn't appreciate my various "Why?" questions, then after a warning booted me when I started another thread on the topic. C'est la vie (on the internet).

Hi and welcome to Pianostreet.

Your piece has a playful character.  As well, you are very attuned to musical structure.

You will find here on Pianostreet an enthusiastic and welcoming community of improvisers.  I hope you share more of your music.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Thank you. Your comments reminded me that perhaps I should have included some context.

Indeed, the tune was meant to sound playful. In fact, it was inspired by seeing my cat mischievously spying - through a window - a beautiful Blue Heron on the backyard pond.

This was very nice to listen to. The only criticism that I can give is that the title is quite weird in Italian :) I’d propose “gatto e airone alla finestra” as an alternative

I was just being playful too, but I agree on one point. "Airone" is more appropriate than "Heron." But I think "nella" is more appropriate than "alla" since, while the cat is indeed at the window, from her perspective, the heron is in the window.  ;D

I understand but "nella finestra" literally means "inside the window", which I don't know if it sounds as strange in English as it does in Italian, unless you'retalking about a window of your internet browser, for instance.
Like, I don't know, there is something inside the glass or something in the closing mechanism of the window. I think personally I never used it.
At the window, by the window, through the window, are all better options in my opinion. But anyway, mine is just a suggestion, it's your composition so you're free to call it any way you like :)
