mmo signature grand Adagio from the A Major Concerto #23
on: February 07, 2021, 09:28:02 PM
Tried to upload the audio to pianostreet. No luck. So here's the YT of MMO plus Signature Grand for the middle movement of Mozart's A major Piano Concerto (23). I honestly think the orchestral accompaniment is very rushed in some places. Also, what I think are Violas entering at bar 69 are WAY out of tune. Anyhow, MMO is great fun and you can play with it very easily these days compared to the OLD days when MMO was on LP, and you had to tune your turntable to your piano. That meant you had to have a variable speed machine, like a Thorens.

Wow, nice.
Could you explain to a novice some of the practical details of how you actually did that? How does this Signature Grand work?

Here's the Allegro from the same A Major Concerto, which of course is very well-known and not that difficult to learn. "MMO" stands for "Music Minus One," which was quite popular when I was a kid. As the words suggest, you get the orchestral accompaniment without the solo part. Actually, both soloist and non-soloist versions are supplied on the same CD, LP (Long Playing Record), and Mp3 download. I'm fortunate to have a Hailun 218 to play, but my family doesn't want to hear me 3 hours a day. So I invested in a used Kawai Gran Touch Keyboard and a number of piano samples. (Didn't have that luxury when I was a kid!)
For the Allegro (1st Movement) of the A Major I use the "Hans Zimmer" piano sample. (I like the "Signature Grand" sample as well. But I didn't use it in this instance.) I know the music well, since I started playing it at 11 and I'm 67 now. It's good fun.
Here's the Allegro, which btw is supplied by a Bulgarian Orchestra, the "Plovdiv Philharmonic," which was created just after WW2 but is now sadly no longer in existence.

Note, the orchestra seems to rush a bit, in particular, at bar 280. Nothing really can be done about that!
