Something macabre..

A fairly brief free improvisation, maybe taking some inspiration from late Liszt. Harmonically quite ambiguous, I think.

Perhaps I could be forgiven for thinking your recent music aspires to a musical embodiment of M.R. James, Arthur Machen and Stephen King. Then again, expression of that particular psychic state is obviously one of your strengths and you do it well, so why not, and the playing is exemplary as always.

Well, it's nice of you to say so! The peculiar thing is that it never occurred to me to improvise in this manner until relatively recently. The genesis of it probably dates back to the finale of the piano concerto I wrote, but I think I've been taking it further in terms of darkness and tonality (or lack of clear tonality) lately.

One can feel the earth quake and walls rattle in this one. This music is quite evocative of imagery and scenes from narratives, as Ted mentions above. Recently, I was listening to a sound designer talk about the way they made scary sounds for film, and I think you have been rather successful at discovering the musical equivalents of such sounds in your most recent creations.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
