Trouble counting!
on: April 24, 2021, 11:17:40 AM
I have trouble counting when the first beat of a measure is a quaver note rest and a crotchet comes right after it. I've tried it many times, but just can't get it right.

Can you post an example of a score where this happens? Is it only in the beginning of a piece that you have trouble, i.e. are you doing fine if it's in the middle of a piece?

My general advice would be to count 1 AND 2 AND 3 AND and so on, so you can fit the notes to the sounds you make with your voice, and practising this by counting one whole bar before you start playing, so you already got the pulse going. If you start "blind" from the first beat when this sort of thing is tricky for you it can be more difficult to get right. My advice would also be to try to relax into the feeling of the pulse. Sometimes, if you tighten up and try to actively control getting it, it gets harder. The feeling is a bit that you let it happen and then it just happens.
