Van Gogh's "Starry Night" - a Piano Improvisation
on: April 27, 2021, 10:34:23 AM

Sat at the piano inspired by one of Vincent Van Gogh's most famous paintings and played this little thing, very much following the style of Ravel and Debussy. Possibly my favorite of all my improvs so far...

Your fondness for this one is well founded. The playing forms admirably suit your natural strengths of simplicity, definition and clarity. There are a number of effective harmonic changes and at a deeper level the piece triggers a sense of vastness appropriate to its subject.

Very impressionistic! I particularly liked the harmonic change just after 0.50.

Totally agree with ted and ronde; I also really liked the shift at around 1:30-2:00 from the B to Bb and back to B in the bass. The colors are really nice and all your arpeggios bring them out.

Beautifully improvised!

What I enjoyed was how you limited the piece to primarily arpeggios and used harmony, shape and ambitus of the arpeggio to convey your ideas.  Your presentation of an impressionistic landscape is vivid and focused.

You might be interested in the music of Alexina Louie, she has written a number of pieces around the subject of stars.  There are things about this improvisation that are reminiscent of her music.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
