Thibaudet's Ravel
on: February 06, 2005, 03:47:29 AM
I heard Thibaudet in concert tonight play the Ravel G major concerto. It was fantastic! The second movement was gorgeous. The outer movements were quite exhilarating. I was disappointed that he did not do any encores. The symphony also played Offenbach's Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld, and Schubert's 9th Symphony (The Great). I attended the pre-concert lecture and found the history of Schubert's symphony fascinating. It was discovered after Schubert's death by Schumann who realized it was quite the gem and immediately sent it to Mendelssohn who conducted it's premier. The concert this evening was lovely. I bought Thibaudet's recording of the Ravel concerto and he signed it as well. I bet he makes a lot of money selling cd's at concerts....

When you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do.

sounds like a great concert! wish i could have heard it, too. i vaguely remember the history as you related it, about the schubert 'great symphony.' thibadeaut is known for playing on the broadwood piano (that chopin played on?) for his chopin renditions, right? he has paired up with a lot of famous singers, too. he's really talented.

do you know why benches fall apart? it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them. hint: buy a bench that does not hinge. buy it for sturdiness.
