Used Boston or new Kawai?
on: May 12, 2021, 01:32:27 PM
Hi all,

we are deciding which grand piano to buy for our family. Myself and my three kids play - beginner to intermediate. We are thinking either a used boston 156 (about 20 years old) or a new Kawai GL-10. I really can't decided! The boston we would get for around 10k and the Kawai for 12k. I also wonder about re-sell value in case we move and need to sell? Any advice would be appreciated! Best

I think ultimately you should try them both out and see which one you like the most. If the Boston is 20 years old and is sold for 10k I would assume it was worth much more new? Which should technically mean that it may be the better instrument, assuming it was well taken care of.

As I understand it Boston and kawai are technically built by the same manufacturer, though they are of competing brands. You can read a bit here: https://www.chuppspianos.com/boston-vs-kawai-pianos-clearing-the-confusion/

Generally resell value will be much lower than what you bought it for, and depend on what condition the instrument is in. So taking well care of your instrument is a good way to keep its value from declining as rapidly. Here are some tips: https://www.steinwaypianos.com/service/caring-for-your-steinway

Indeed the new value of the boston would be 30k. I played them both and they sound very good - the Boston slightly better, but the Kawai really good as well. And the boston is in great shape and also comes with a 5 year dealer guarantee. Thanks for the care tipp link!
