Chopin Etude Op10 No 5 sheet music wrong

Hi everyone,

I've been working on this piece for awhile now and the sheet music is wrong. I have a Schirmer 1902 copy and M23 and M24 have high Ebs in them when they should be Gbs. I found one other publisher that put one of the Gbs back in and left out the other one. upon listening to some of the greats play It Pollini, Rubenstein Horowitz, they are all consistent with the high Gbs. I'm assuming I should default to the greats but how would I know what's right or wrong for my own sanity.

Get an edition that's an Urtext. Those are researched from the autograph score and first editions and all that good stuff to provide a trustworthy reading. I checked my Henle Urtext for you and it's supposed to be a high Gb not an Eb

<Sniffs> Well Cortot's student edition has Gb in those spots as well.....

Cortot's editions were actually an attempt to make a well-researched, authentic edition of each work without all the added dynamics or changed notes or other liberties many editors of the time took. He actually had a huge collection of autograph scores and stuff like that from different composers in his library. I sometimes see his name pop up in Urtext editions with a thank you note for letting the editor use the autograph. Unfortunately, despite his attempts, there are sometimes errors in his editions compared to modern Urtexts.

Both the National Edition and Paderewski have G-flats.

National Edition has a comment about it. To summarize: Autograph shows Eb. This mistake was corrected by Chopin in a First French Edition belonging to Jane Stirling. First French Edition was based on the Autograph.

Related note to Bar 72, National Edition prints high Gb here.
Autograph shows high Eb. It was subsequently corrected by Chopin in proofs of the First French Edition.

Prints of older editions such as the one OP has from 1902 might be based on First Editions, and may not have accommodated corrections by Chopin.
