Albeniz' Jerez from Iberia
on: August 12, 2021, 05:19:29 AM
Really gotten into this piece, lately.  Anyone have any deep-track special recs they like, either for the whole interp or some of the passages?

I'm especially curious to hear it a bit slower than the current performance standard, making it into something bigger (if I wasn't already banned from da SDC, this would do me in for sure).

These are the two I found on youtube; the first one is decent but a bit rigid and needs more color.  The second one I'm about to listen to, though I don't think the pianist is especially serious:

Jerez and El Albaicin are my joint favourite pieces of Iberia.

When I first approached this piece I preferred the slower recordings. That being said 13-14 mins is too slow for me. Orozco and Pizarro manage 11 mins successfully but you're pushing it after that (Pizarro's is the best IMO- he also has a beautiful slower version of the Granados Los Requiebros on the same album)

There's also a wonderful orchestration of it. Although it's a real tragedy that Ravel never got to do it (he wanted to!) :'(

Now I've studied the piece for a few years I feel the faster tempo is more suitable. This guitar arrangement is the sort of thing that must have been in Albeniz's mind (minus the singer). The only piano recording I know of that matches this tempo without spoiling the overall mood is one of Larrocha's earlier ones

Ok, will check the Pizarro.  If the last video is the Larrocha you had in mind, for some reason in the US the copyrights won't let me play it :(  What's the date on it?  Is it one of the studio recs, or a live one?

Thanks!  Yeah btw if Albaicin is one of your favs (one of mine, too, along with Malaga and the usual Triana/Evocacion) then I hope you've already heard this awesome piece.  Even if so, maybe someone else will discover it from here.  I don't understand why it's not standard rep already, and I think it's fair to say that it's only a matter of time before it enters the pantheon:

Like, to people who haven't heard it already, I'm gonna go this far: It's Albeniz' best piece (apart from Iberia as a whole of course).
