Advice for LTCL Repertoire Choice
on: November 16, 2021, 01:06:38 PM
Hi all,

For LTCL it is required to choose pieces that add up to 37-43 mins in total. So far I have anchored down c.25 minutes including;

J.S. Bach - Concerto no. 3 in D minor, BWV 974 (after Marcello) [10"]
Chopin - Ballade no. 1 in G minor, Op 23 [10"]
Vine - Bagatelles no. 3-5 [5"]

Any advice on a 12-15" piece that would complete my recital duration? Many thanks smile

FYI here is the repertoire list https://www.trinitycollege.com/resource/?id=8546

Slightly over 15 mins in most performances, but how about Debussy's Estampes?  I've just started working on these and they are gorgeous pieces: the technical demands are not huge but there is so much musical subtlety to work on.

Thanks for this, are you sure the technicality is not that demanding? It looks tough for all pieces, not accounting for musicality

I'm not saying they're technically easy, of course; but although my technique is not the greatest they seem manageable to me - easier than the Chopin Ballade, I think. Jardins Sous la Pluie is probably the hardest of the set, if only because it's so relentless.

I agree Debussy's Estampes are not too difficult, I played Jardins sous la pluie for DipABRSM and I knew someone who played Pagodes for ATCL. You could also play a combination of his Preludes which gives you more flexibility to play to your strengths.

For another French suggestion, Ravel's Sonatine is 12 mins and less demanding than his other works on that list.
