WHY have I never heard of this composer before???

It's Lisztian in its difficulty, but it seems to have the harmonic modulations of Rachmaninoff.

I HAVE to try this piece out for myself.

Nice playing, rachfan (RIP) would have loved it.

this. Yes. David I considered him a dear friend and loved seeing this comment and others remembering such a wonderful person.
And yes the execution is beyond  good , super excellent performance of a difficult piece :)

do also be aware of his larger scale works , thal, myself and others for years have in particular praised his piano concerto 1 as probably the or one of the greatest romantic /romanticesque concertos of them all, and the piano sonata no 2 all 4 movements have a cohesiveness that is super satisfying and it's almost a love letter to the Rachmaninoff piano concerto no 2, it's criminal that it's not part of the standard lit cause it's amazing. I'm about to listen to it again just cause it's on my mind w this rely and hakik's excellent post

rachfan had some nice recordings of Bortkiewicz preludes IIRC.

The Baldwin (IIRC) had a nice tone as well.

Thanks for the remembering.

This is absolutely sublime. I have not been around and am very sad to read of Rachfan's passing. I had wanted to look him up, but also had that feeling he may be gone. But Hakki, this recording puts me in a spell. It is a great gift.

I don't know if I've heard Bortkiewicz's piano concerto.  Rachfan would had to have brought
it up to me before.  I will have to look for it, especially with the accolades lighted on it
by the high profile folks here.
He was not of an age, but for all time.
