I'd have defo included the Rubinstein No. 4 (probably my favorite) and something from Scharwenka!  But some of these I've never heard of, eager to check them out.

Thanks, I really enjoy this piano concerto as well!

Scharwenka is very good too. This is a first list, I have prepared a part 2 to be released in a near future as well!

A nice list but mine would have had to include the Bortkiewicz 1st and the Nikisch.
The Scharwenka 1st is unique in Concerto literature as all 3 movements are allegro and I would give it the nod over the others.
A huge inexhaustible subject.

Jonathan Powell is soon to perform the Scharwenka in Poland, sio I understand.

boooo, 'three fast movements' is way less interesting to me than the awesome themes and musical maturity in #3/#4! I guess 4 is his 'magnus opus' but I prefer 3.

I would also consider including the Paderewski and Tausig.  Is the Tchaikovsky #2 rare enough?  I know Pletnev's recording includes the extended trio in the slow movement.  Moszkowski also has an earlier concerto besides the big E Major one.  It's also a beast, clocking in at 50':

I would also consider including the Paderewski and Tausig.

Tausig's Concerto is lost and years of research has not found it.
Perhaps you refer to his souped up version of the Chopin 1st.

Actually not sure what I was thinking of, some 5 movement concerto (not Busoni).  It was a big piece, like 40+ minutes, and I don't think it had a number associated with it so may have been the composer's only one.  Kinda wanna say that it was > 50 minutes, even.  Pretty sure the name was either Germanic or Scandinavian (not Raff), though not 100% sure it was all that similar to 'Tausig' haha

Maybe it was even more than five movements, but I'm pretty sure about that.  I know Naxos released a rec of it, that's the one I used to listen to.

Interesting references above, thanks for sharing these. There is definitely space for more composers. I have prepared a second list that I will post in this thread.

Hi all,

I have posted a second top 10 romantic piano concertos as it was necessary to add some influential composers. You will find Elmas, Lalo, Glasunov, Kabalevsky and more that you may not know. I did select the passages that were the most impactful (from my perspective at least) in these concertos.

Do not hesitate to let me know your view on this list!

Great list!
I didn't know many of these, Moszkowski piano concerto no. 1 in B minor would a good one for your next list (just in case you didnt know the piece yet).

Thanks a lot! Glad you have enjoyed it.

I had included the piano concerto n. 2 of Moszkowski in the first top 10. I agree that the first one is excellent too!

This should be known more .even incomplete it's orders if magnitude better than some of the stuff that gets regular plan, huge as heck first movement , Beethoven eat your heat out,
Heck I'd be ak for just subbing in oatt of this thing for the Schumann turdcerto,
And flushing that turd away for good
