“The Sound Always Comes First” — Andrea Bonatta on Teaching Liszt

Why tone matters more than speed, why reading Goethe matters as much as practising octaves, and how a single insight can transform a performance. Hey everyone,

I decided to upload this performance I gave of the Brahms 2nd piano/violin sonata with Jason Yu, an awesome guy and awesome violinist in the NY Phil!

The audio setup was not ideal, so the balance is definitely a bit heavy on the piano.  What can be said about this music... I personally find this sonata to be one of the best ever written for these two instruments.

Feedback and discussion, as always, is welcomed!

Wonderful performance!  I agree that the piano was a bit heavy due to audio setup. You and Jason are both great here.

Brahms Op 100 is one of the best ever written for violin and piano.  Another one is the Franck violin sonata.  Any chance you 2 might play this?  Franck had huge hands (as did Tatum).  You should be well prepared for the LH 10ths in the last mvt of the Franck after playing Tatum stride. ;)

Frodo, thanks once again for your feedback and kind words.  I have definitely always wanted to play the Franck sonata... the time has not yet come. But soon!

Your performance of the Brahms is outstanding!  I am sure you will do equally well with the Franck.

Franck received very little recognition in his lifetime.  His violin sonata helped him receive at least a little recognition before his death.  It is a masterpiece!  12/10/2022 is the 200th anniversary of his birth.  I look forward to your performance when and if you have a chance to learn and perform this work.
